Old and New FN Shelves
-
Saturday, November 24, 2007 9:05 AM
There used to be complaints about ferret feet getting caught in the Ferret Nation Shleves. They have since redesigned the shelves to remedy the problem. Here is the old FN Shelf [image]local://upfiles/226/204C37F445EE4AC8BE7048CEFA83D988.jpg[/image]

Wow I can't believe there used to be that large of a gap!! Mine are the new shelves thankfully. Glad they fixed them.

You'd think they'd do a whole reinvention of the levels though. Perhaps a better way of putting the levels so they can be removed from the wire, but not have little bits where its still possible for fur to get stuck and ripped out. Or tootie toes stuck. I know they've fixed it pretty well. But I'm sure they could reinvent the whole shelves to look and be safer, don't you agree. Other than that, I love the cage, would love to have one but I can't get one to me here.

I agree, they are better, but there are still some gaps between the spacings for things to get stuck - I put a fleece shelf cover thing on mine, tortiebaby posted how to make them, and those fit the shelves nicely and the ferrets love to roll on them probably because they are soft lol. But maybe they should make the shelves all one piece, I don't take out the plastic insert, most likely because I don't want to fuss getting it out.

I don't have a FN cage, but that 'gap' does seem like it may be big enough for a fuzzy to get their foot stuck in, and possibly hurt

I had no idea they changed the shelves. I got my FN cage shortly after they came out, so I have the old shelves in mine, but my ferrets have never had a problem or gotten their tootsies stuck in the gap. I'm in the market for a new FN for the three newbies I got a month ago. When I get one, I'll have to compare the new and old shelves.

The plastic on the shelves are actually flexable enough so that you can bend them and remove them from the metal to clean.

Mine is definitely a newer variety, but there is still enough of a gap that my BigFerret caught a toe in it and wrenched his leg pretty badly. I really thought he broke his foot/leg, as swollen as it was (and I'm not a worrywart, fwiw). His x-rays revealed some inflammation, but no fractures, and he was on ferret "Motrin" for a week, so all was well. However, I'd still encourage people to be vigilant in covering any gaps in their shelves, regardless of their cage model. That said, I still love my Ferret Nation cage.

Some people have taken duct tape and secured the front of the plastic shelf so that it can't move around. I cover mine with shelf covers. Sometimes I use the fancy ones, other times I just use an old t-shirt.

Can someone post a picture of the old shelf and new shelf. Just posted this week on the FML, that midwest would like to hear from anyone who's ferret has gotten caught in the shelf.

Both Felix and Sadie have caught their toes on the cage. Sadie caught hers when I was standing right there, but Felix broke his toe and required a vet trip to be sure that was all the damage he did. He popped a blood vessel as well, and still has a dark blue splotch between those toes
