Ferret aggression
- Sunday, November 04, 2018 10:26 PM
So these two ferrets were at Petco for about 8 months and nobody was buying them because one of them was kind of a biter they said. They were selling them for really cheap considering they weren’t selling. So I got them and brought them home. The biter absolutely terrifies me. It’s not like a nip bite it’s a full on lock down bite. And it hurts a lot. I have no clue what to do. People tell me to take her to the vet because this behavior could be caused by pain or sickness. Does anyone have any tips or experience with this? I want her to feel safe. People also tell me to scruff her and I’ve tried but she stiffens her neck and then bites me even harder. I really don’t want to bring her back and I know the rescue near me won’t take aggressive ferrets. I cant even handle her, because if my hand is near her I get bitten. I can’t even open the cage with out getting attacked. Please someone help!

Hello and Welcome to the forum! One thing to remember is your little one is getting use to a new environment. Also pet shop ferrets aren’t worked with and handle a lot while they are there. Nip training needs to be started when they are little. I have had some fear biters and they could bite clear to the bone. I started using Bitter Apple spray as a deterrent. Most don’t like the taste. I’ve also used it on ferrets when one is to aggressive with its cagemates. I’ve had pretty good success. If possible when letting your fuzzy out of the cage let them walk out on their own if possible. My ferret now goes in and out of the cage when playing by getting on the cat tower as a step. When playing with your baby use a stuffed animal in your hand so he can’t bite you. I know it’s discouraging but with love and patience he should come around. Some of my worst biters became the most loving.
