What do ferrets smell like?
-
Sunday, December 06, 2015 8:07 AM
I am accustomed to hearing a ferret's scent described as "musky", but I don't really know what musky means. Is it like the smell of an old library book (which I like) or is it a woodsy scent? I have even heard people say that ferrets smell like corn chips or grape soda. I held a ferret in the pet store yesterday, and its aroma was, frankly, a very light stink, but I assume most well-cared for ferrets would smell a little bit less. What is the closest thing you can compare your ferret's scent to? Thank you so much! Scarlett

ferrets smell differently. I've seen all of those descriptions, but I don't think any of them fit ours, except maybe the books. my wife and I can Identify our fuzzies by fur feel, weight/body shape smell and sound of them walking on our bare floors 75% of the time.

I have had 45 ferrets in my lifetime and they mostly smelled like grape juice but a few smelled mildly like corn chips. Mine that came from the pet store had a bath due to the smell they have in a pet store as soon as I got them home and I immediately loved their smell after their bath. They smell way better than a dog no matter if it is before or after a dog takes a bath now my cats have a nice smell too. Personally I just love all my animals no matter how they smell

also, it doesn't take long for a pet store glass enclosure to get stunk up, and even tho they change bedding every day (hopefully) they don't bathe the ferts.

I love ferret smell. The one I notice the most is corn chips.

To me they have a damp musky smell, almost moth ball-ish, but not bad!

I can second the corn chips! Loki smells like that sometimes. Mostly, I don't notice any smell at all until I am stuffing him into my face for cuddles. He also smells a lot like Chinese food sometimes. And then there are other times where he smells really sweet- and it resembles honey. Either way, I really like how he smells all the time!
