New Owner

My name is Nevada, I'm a 20 year old funeral director from New York. I'm about to adopt two ferrets who need a good home because their owner's daughter no longer wants them. They are older and already trained so I'm not worried about training them or anything. I have never owned a ferret before. So much research has been done in the past weeks since I was asked to give these two little boys a good home. I've looked up so much about feeding, cleaning, and all around caring for ferrets. I'll be picking them up on Friday and I was just hoping people who already have them could give me a few tips that youtube and google don't talk about as much. Right now I live alone, but soon my boyfriend will be moving back in from college, as will my best friend (who has previously owned ferrets) and her girlfriend. I know they are social animals but will introducing new people to them affect them at all? Also my 21st birthday is coming up and a ton of people want to come visit me (I just graduated college and everyone supposedly misses me) will they be ok with 15+ people in my four bedroom apartment?

Hi there.  Welcome to the group. My advice for your birthday party would be to leave them in their cage.  Moving can be stressful on them, so I'd give them time to adjust to their new home.  (We're moving 7 from Florida to Tennessee this weekend.  I also just graduated college and I'm taking a job there.)  Plus, with people going in and out there's a real chance one or both could sneak out the door.  It's happened to me, and it's just awful.  It's ok to introduce them to people, once you get to know them yourself.  I don't know if you live in the City, but I believe they are still illegal there.  If you can trust them not to bite a guest, then go for it, but please don't just get them out of the cage and pass them around the party until they have had some time to adjust to their new home.  If someone gets bitten, you could be in danger of losing them, if you are in NYC. There was a move to get ferrets legalized in NYC this spring, but I don't think it passed.  If I am wrong, please let me know.

Our Wenminster is from Upstate.  I'm sure she can help with vets, etc, if you are from that area.  If you have specific questions, fire away.  Unfortunately, a lot of archived information has gotten wiped from the forum for unknown reasons.  But the mods and some regular members have had years of experience with the fuzzy little poop factories.
