Get another ferret?
-
Monday, June 08, 2015 10:45 AM
Hi, I'm new to the forum. I already posted in the introduction section. I have a male ferret that is almost 2 1/2 years old, and have had him for two years. I've been thinking of getting another ferret because he really enjoyed playing with a puppy. But which sex is good for an adult male or does it even matter? In my experience with ferrets, I have preferred males to the females. Also, would a larger baby ferret be okay? I would love to hear about others experiences with this. Thanks for any help.

In all the materials I have studied and researched, I noticed one thing most ferrets get along great together. It takes introducing under supervision at first. You never want to put unaltered males with altered males this can cause fights that are not just play in mating seasons. Out of all the ferrets we have rescued and gotten we have only had one problem. We also have mostly males only 1 female right now. The one problem we had was we just had gotten Troy (RIP) we did not know much about ferrets he was a rescue. He did well with just me and my husband, two dogs and cat. We got another rescue a month or so later Trystan. Troy was very dominant. We did not know about dominance fighting. Troy was alpha and would grabbed Trystan by the nape of his neck and drag him screeching. We kept breaking it up and separated them.I finally was able to do some research on the matter and realized it is all fun and games for them as long as there is no blood or feces involved. The screeching is part of the dominance dance too. My girl still does it to my boys from time to time. Hope this helps you.

It all depends on the ferret personality. Do you have a ferret shelter near by....maybe your little one can pick out his new friend. I have never had any problems with my hobs (unaltered male) playing with my other ferrets. They all got along just fine, until they went into season. When they started to pester the other by mounting them...then I would separated them. There was no fighting in our home....unless it was n bone!

Hi and welcome. It's really up to the individual ferrets. I've found that problems arise when there haven't been any new arrivals in a long time, but again, it depends. I would think an older male would be better with an older male. Kits tend to get picked on until they're big enough to defend themselves.

I really wish there was a ferret shelter near by. There is one a couple of hours away, but the only ones available are either bonded pairs or groups. I've been checking the classifieds for older ferrets that are no longer wanted, but haven't had any luck yet. Max is neutered and from Marshall farms, and the few pet stores that have ferrets here are Marshall ferrets, so I don't have to worry about that at least. Maybe another male might be better because I have noticed that females tend to be a bit more hyper. At least the female I had years ago was, and I've noticed that at pet stores as well. No matter what I will introduce them slowly. I've heard bathing them together at first helps because they will smell like each other. Has anyone tried this? Thanks for the advice.

I do the bathing not together but one after another same shampoo. Mine hate bathing cant handle more then one dolphin with claws trying to escape. My husband and I bathed them together once....I repeat once. I thought maybe they wouldn't be so scared if their brothers and sister was there. Nope I had to fend off 5 sets of claws and dolphin jumps. It was funny but it was terrible too.

Yeah, bathing two at a time might be a big challenge. I have a ferret daily spritz that I could spray on both after bathing separately. If I get another fuzz butt that is.

Where are you located at? Do you have access to Craigslist....my only warning is make sure you give them a good look over before taking them. I got one with Cancer and he survived only 10 days. It was worth it though he was living in a very bad place. They shaved him and fed him the wrong things and left him in this tiny cage and never played with him. It was a pleasure to have him and make him feel loved for those 10 days. He also got the care he needed from the vet when he went into seizures. The people I got him from would have done nothing for him and he would have had to live through all the pain he would have suffered if we had not chosen to let him cross the rainbow bridge.

Well, I did it. I got another ferret, named Possum, an eight week old male (very young). I believe he is deaf, but I'll get into that later. I know that this is a big age difference, but I have had him for a few days and things are going okay. I have them in separate cages beside of each other and they have play times together. Now, I have noticed them playing together some and Max does display some dominance behaviors like scruffing and dragging on occasion, but so far nothing too bad. I monitor their time together very closely. I do think Max is a bit stressed because his stool has been different lately (Dark green and sort of loose). However, today he had a much longer period of interaction than usual with Possum, which I'd say is a good sign. I've read that it may take weeks or months before they become buddies. Has anyone had any experience with helping an adult and a kit bond?

it sounds like things are going well. They have to sort it out themselves, but a little scruffing and dragging is a lot better than all out fighting, which we had the last time (3 years ago) that we introduced kits to older ferts. At this point, I would try caging them together, when someone is home in case they have problems. If it doesn't work out, wait another week. They may choose separate beds at first, but ferrets often surprise their ferrents by how fast they do bond.

There’s no shortage of individuals making an attempt to sell you on tried and true strategies for beating the casino. everybody appears to possess a “system” that they claim works for them, however if you raise around, you’ll notice that they created their cash marketing books, not taking part in gmblsites blog about syndicate casino
