Scratching at doorways

I know I won't necessarily change the behavior, because by nature ferrets are diggers, but they are scratching up the carpet (and now the wood under the carpet) underneath my doors when they are out. I have tried the pet off type stuff, but we also have a dog and cats that are to have access to the areas that the ferrets aren't, and the stuff makes our other guys avoid the other rooms. We're just looking for something to put under the doors so that there isn't an issue of ruining the floor underneath the carpet. We rent, so we'd love to NOT have to replace the subfloor lol Thanks for any suggestions!!!

you can try plastic carpet runner that you can get by the foot, i think, at home depot/lowe's.  The only other solution that I know will work is to leave the door open.  Sprays seem to have no effect on ferrets.
