Alice was the last ferret that I brought into my marriage to Dar24. My ex gave her to me to fill the hole left by Erika, my first Heart Ferret. Alice was tiny, even for a 6 week old kit, and she always was the smallest adult ferret I've ever had. Sometimes she scared me with her petite frame, and her whole life I was waiting to celebrate the day she reached 1 1/2 lbs, which she just touched in March of this year.
But, dynamite comes in small packages. She had attitude. When she was young, she not only got along with every rescue I brought in, but she and Carol (Poppy) would show them the ropes and who was boss. In 2011, when Dar brought her 4 to Florida, Jaffa was out to assert his dominance, and Al was a frequent defenseless victim. So, I decided to equalize the sides by pining Jaffa's shoulders to see what Al would do. She stood there in his face and just squealed and jumped around and nipped at his face until I let him go, and when I did, he ran off. They we frequent bed buddies after. This morning, I let Jaffa see her for the first time in a couple days so he could say good-bye.
So many of Alice's stories involve Poppy, because most times when one got in trouble, the other was nearby. Alice and Poppy would find escape routes to the outside, then come back and show the other, so that several times they were found outside together. No one will ever know how many times they got out on their own, but they always came home. But Alice found hidey holes that no other ferret could reach. She would sleep under our new kitchen cabinets, oozing through a gap just 3/4 inch wide. I never worried about that, because I knew there was nothing in there. She didn't like walkies, but for a few months while I was unemployed and out of school, I decided to let them dig in the front garden, ans none of the plants were growing. Al and Poppy started digging in a hole Frank and Erika had started a couple years before, and built a warren under my small front doorway slab. Once, we came home from shopping and there was Alice's tiny beautiful face sticking out of the hole. She had ghosted out the door behind us, never leaving the borrow, which prompted me to install the first ferret fence in the doorway. I made a warning sign using her tag that Dar made for me.
Alice was usually the last one to be found at bed time, but she's been so drama free the last couple years we just let her free roam 24/7, 6 months after after I finally decided the Florida room was FINALLY Alice-proofed, unless there was a good reason. She had her own schedule and liked to slppe in until 10-11.
We're gonna miss your sweet little face and speckled nose at treat time. May you and Poppy dig your own Carlsbad Caverns on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.
