Orange spot on sable ferret? - Thursday, September 18, 2014 8:05 PM
Hello everyone, I have an 8 month old sable ferret who is in great health and just had a wellness exam a few weeks ago. He's in the process of growing in his winter coat and, all of a sudden, his undercoat between his shoulderblades has turned bright, pumpkin orange. It's just this one spot. I'm used to some orange undertones with my silver roan, but this is such a strange, centralized location. The skin is normal, the hair feels normal... it's just a different color. He's acting normally, all vitals are normal. Any ideas why he could have developed this? Should I be racing him to a vet?

sometimes the skin's oils cause a discoloration which may happen during new fur growth.  As long as he is acting normally I don't think racing him to the vet is in order, especially since you were just at the vet a few weeks ago.  (But that's just me, and not to be taken in lieu of true medical advice, or held against ferret.com or any members of this forum).  I'd just keep an eye on him and see if his behavior changes.

I noticed a huge patch of orange skin on my sable's back yesterday (when I was at the vet anyway, fortunately). Her hair is really think, so I didn't notice it. And she's in tip-top shape!
