Do ferrets actually need furball laxative, or is it just another moneymaking scheme?

Unlike cats or dogs, ferrets have the inability to easily cough up and dispel a furball. The fur then collects and is held together with a natural fat binder, and unless the ferret passes it, it will become a life threatening condition and a very expensive piece of surgery if the ferret is strong enough to be a surgical candidate. I don't recommend the common laxatives that are harmful, containing molasses and petrolatum. I've created a product called Poopin Pumpkin, which is a once a week gastric maintenance product. Its a two-component product made from non-gmo organic air dried pumpkin powder and powdered whole eggs, when mixed with water turns into a tasty soup. Its also the product you want on the shelf for the day your ferret eats something it shouldn't have; ie rubber buttons off of the remote. Its also for cats and dogs. Yes they need something that aids in pushing the fur through their system so it does not create a blockage.  I do not recommend the commercially made lax, raw egg yolk, pureed pure pumpkin works really good and does not contain any sugars.  Which the commercially made ones do and loads of it.

Although some commercially made products have lots of sugar, others do not.  We use Tomlyn's Natural Laxatone which is both sugar and petroleum-free.


We use the lax regularly during shedding season, but during the off-season, use it less regularly.
