When I was showing my ferrets, I used the playpen all time. I still use the playpen when I travel. I do have the mat for it. Here some suggestion for mat: *blue tarp (easy to clean up mess) *Old bed spread, sheet, blanket. (not so easy to clean up the mess, but it's washable)

I use the play pen for traveling all the time. I also use it as a "gate" when needed - for example, I put it around the Christmas tree, to block off doors, and to keep them out of the pantry. I have a mat and love it. Well, more accurately, I love having a mat - not necessarily the one that comes with the pen. It makes clean-up easier, and you dont' have to worry about digging at carpets.
