RE: How to build an outside shelter
-
Sunday, March 29, 2009 4:50 PM
I have a question. Isn't there a concern about fleas and other pests in letting ferrets play outside. We had a major issue a while back because our roommate's cat got outside and brought fleas into the house. They are impossible and it took us forever to get rid of them. Are there any recommendations for avoiding this when creating an outdoor 'run' for your ferrets because i like this idea, but don't want fleas again. They made the fuzzbutts miserable.

This looks great. I am planning to move my ferrets into a garden when I move next July. I was thinking of having them in Hutches with runs but this has made me think bigger. Thankyou for showing this.

gilowyn The doors are locked, of course, and the garden is half-way hidden and protected by a locked gate. But yes, if someone really wanted to steal them, he will always find a way. They are all chipped, though... I have learned that locks mostly keep an honest man honest.... (so sad)

Do you need to put wire on the ground? How much will ferrets tunnel? My guys would love to have a play place like these. Wonderful job!!

Hi, I notice a few of you have sand/sandy earth as a base in the run, I was wondering how you find this to keep clean if/when your guys use it as a toilet? I have a shed with large run attached, the floor of which is currently planks raised off the ground, but I'd like to do something more natural in there for them...my problem is that they are all rescue ferrets, and don't have the best toiletting habits, and I'm concerned that the sand will just end up smelly and unplesant. Any thoughts or ideas welcomed Thanks, Selz
