Using Flea Medicine and Ferrets?
-
Thursday, November 19, 2009 12:35 AM
I'm new to ferrets. My ferret is around six months and pretty much fully grown. I let her outside sometimes (w/ me watching very closely) to run around. Now I went on a vacation and had a friend watch her (they have dogs that aren't flea treated). After I came back she had fleas, I knew how dangerous fleas can be for ferrets so I bought the Advantage kitten flea drops. I treated her for two months and the fleas cleared up. It's winter now so I don't let her outside but when summer comes back around I want to start the flea treatment back up. I know to only give her two drops of the advantage but I heard that giving it every month can be harmful. Any body have experience w/ this?

I found a flea or two on my little guy, and I also have a dog and three cats. The dog is the only one that goes outside, so I'm certain she is the carrier of the fleas. But I have been reading on here alot and I do remember seeing a threat about fleas and how you should NOT give them the treatment every month like you would a cat, because the flea medicine is poision, and it will build up in your fuzzies system and could be very dangerous. Best suggestion would be to consult with your vet about how often this should be given. We're leaving for the vet's office in 5 minutes and we have to ask about flea meds too :(

If you want continual protection against fleas, you can add apple cider vinegar to their water. Start off with 1/4 teaspoon for every 2 cups of water and gradually build it up to 1 teaspoon to 2 cups of water. ACV has an added benefit of reducing waste odor so it can replace bio-odor if you happen to use that. I personally save using Advantage for when I see fleas. For my guys (who weigh around 4 pounds each) I give half of a kitten dose which seems to last closer to 2 months then just one.

I prefer to use Revolution. I do it every month for the summer months and every other for the winter. I like this one because it treats ear mites as well as fleas.

I also use Revolution and had my vet prescribe it based on weight...one large dog dose treats my 4 ferrets and 2 cats for 3 months, I have a syringe marked with the correct amount for each animal so I can be sure no one gets a larger dose than they need (as opposed to when I was using Frontline for Cats and one dose covered 5-15 lbs...too much variable and easy to over- and under-dose with the squeezy drop packaging). It's also way cheap this way, about $5 a month to keep all my animals covered.
