Chewing flip flops... - Monday, November 09, 2009 6:49 PM
I made the mistake of leaving pair of flip flops in my little ones room and he chewed them (big surprise right) Anyways, he doesn't seem to be eating any of the stuff he chews off of them (I've been watching and checking poos) so I was wondering if he could be teething?  He's pretty young still... I've had him for about a month and he was maybe 10-16 weeks old when I got him.

First, as you know, get the flip flops out of his reach.  :)

And now onto your question - ferrets like to chew on rubbery things.  One of mine likes to chew on the buttons of the remote control.  Others like shoe soles.  It really doesn't have anythign to do with teething, it's just that they like the feeling.  Sort of like how we used to chew on a pencil, because we like how it feels - not that we're teething or anything.

I'd get some n-bones or chicken wings and let him chew on those.  It's good for their teeth and gums, and wont cause a blockage.

Yes of course! I've taken them away, but we seem to be playing this game of "mom takes it away and Loki spends his time trying to get them back". I haven't caught in the act of chewing, so far he's been just dragging them from room to room when he wins the game :) But he has chewed them all apart. .
He has also found himself some of those little nerf balls (from the previous tenants kids) and he seems to like those too.. he carries them around and pushes them with his nose.. (yes, I pick those up when I'm not watching him - and then he starts looking for his/my flip flops!)

Like chicken wings that I would eat?? (Not hot or spicey of course).  I don't cook... so is this something he can have raw? if he wants it?? Just a pack of regular chicken wings from the grocery store??
I've been reading a little bit about a raw diet, and I'm thinking about giving it a go with him.

Yep - give him RAW chicken wings. Go to the grocery store, to the meat department, and pick up a styrofoam container of wings.  he may not recognize it as food, at first, so you may have to cut it up for him.

As for the nerf and flipflops - yep, he likes those soft foamy things.  Try some foamy fries treats.  Those are good, too.

I had one ferret who loved kongs.  He'd pick them up and put them into a hidey hole.  If we had 4 kongs out on the floor, he'd move all 4 to his hidey hole.  Then mean ol mommy would move some kongs and make him go back to work.  :)

Okay great! I'm gonna give this raw food thing a shot this weekend when I time to sit down and capture his attention. I know if I were a strict carnivore I would be wondering where the meat is!!!

I also have some pork chops that have been in my freezer for quite a while. I read that they can have raw pork (as long as it's been frozen). Is that true???

He's getting better. Brought him to work with me yesterday for a little while (he dusted the whole office... behind EVERYTHING! LOL )
