(My Lolita BITES!)
-
Saturday, October 24, 2009 3:13 PM
I have read through the threads but am not exactly sure how to go about fixing this biting thing that Lolita has! I just got her Thursday, and so far everything had been good. She even got along well with Mulberry (and she seems to wear the pants in the relationship!) I got Mulberry last Saturday and because he had been in the pet store since his nine week arrival (he is twelve weeks now) he had been good natured. He picked ME, not the other way around. He is sweet, and the only time he uses his teeth is when he wants to hold my finger still so he can lick it. I was lucky to have such a good-natured ferret, and then I got LOLITA. She clucks more than he does and plays a bit more violently with the toys than he does. She is sweet, don't get my wrong, but TODAY: She all out bruttally attacked my sock-clothed foot whilst hissing violently. I have heard her hiss at Mully and while chasing toys, but never at ME. She had first hissed at my friend while she was playing too rough with her. (SHE KEPT DROPPING HER. I WAS SO NERVOUS ABOUT LO.) But I couldn't understand. Maybe it was the socks? I hadn't worn socks around her before! There was "TIME OUT!" all over my socks, and she still feasted upon my toes. I have scruffed, and scruffed, and scruffed and I'm not sure if it is the right thing to do. Lo is nine weeks old, and I'm not sure how to go about the behavior problem. As normally? Like all other ferrets? I just don't want her to end up hating me, that little brat. Please give me some advice! PS, I'm new to this forum! Hello all! : D EDIT: She is starting to worry me to death! I stand there trying to open a door that's hard to open and she tries to chomp down on my toes. It doesnt hurt too bad, but it is so vicious that it scares me a bit and I scruff her. ONLY, she WONT LET GO and holds on to the point where I just have to pull and shake her off. I feel bad when a do this until she starts dancing around my toes hissing at me. Her hisses worry me and I feel like she is doing it for some malicious pleasure. I just dont understand why she keeps hissing and attacking me so violently! Have I upset her? Does she hate me? OH PLEASE HELP ME.

Here what works in our household. Ferret do like white socks. This is what I do. Watch your ferret’s body language. Once you see him/her coming towards your feet. Take you’re finger and wave it in front of him, at the same time tell him/her no. Then immediately turn his/her attention to something else. What I do is turn them over on their back and tickle their belly. Then I chase after them and make a game out of it. “Don’t you bit mommie! This works for us. Goal is to turn the behavior to a positive one, not a negative behavior. I hope this helps.

My first girl Shaniqua did the same thing when I got her. She was 9 weeks old and would grab my sock hold and hiss. I could raise my foot to where she was 2 feet of the ground and she would still hold. What I did was just scold her untill she let go then hold her on the ground on her back and say no and hiss. This took about three weeks to correct. Now I can play with my hand and she'll just mouth and all I get with the feet is a few tugs on my socks when she wants my attention.

It is nice to know that the behavior can be corrected. I now have another ferret (making my count three, which to me is the perfect number) and he bites worse than Lolita. He is her brother actually, and his brother bites the WORST. A family of BITERS. He just drew blood from my Father's finger, and I held him by the scruff all the way back to the cage. I tried to bitter stuff and that doesn't work. My step mom suggested hot sauce, but I wouldn't dare! Does scruffing actually work? I scruff them and they latch right back on! Does it really work eventually? Gosh, it is good to have atleast one non-biter! Mulberry doesn't bite at all!

I would suggest giving them one on one time with mom only. Put them in a enclosed room. Sit down every night with them. Arm yourself with a stuff animal to block the bit. I think I would use the scruff and drag along the floor (short distance). While telling them no. Then pick him/her up move them away from you. This may take a week or month. Your ferret needs to bond with you. You need to teach them what is acceptable behavior. Good luck and keep us post on your progress

Will this work for an older ferret?

are you saying 'NO' while youre scruffing? theyre smart little things and will soon learn what it means..also you could try scruffing and dragging her a little bit on the carpet, this also shows you mean buisness and are the boss.. try gaining trust with treats from the hand, she needs to learn you are a friend =) let us know how it goes! =)
