Childrens Benadryl - Friday, March 20, 2009 11:24 AM
Was just wondering if anyone here had previously been instructed to administer childrens benadryl to their fert, and what the dosage was??

My vet told me a half teaspoon and that seems a little high to me.

Benadryl Children's Liquid 12.5 mg/tsp (5 ml)

Dosage = 1mg per pound

Example: 3 lb ferret
needs 3 mg   3 divide by 12.5 = .24

.24 x 5ml (tsp) = 1.2 ml

3 lbs ferret gets 1.2ml
 This is the formula Wenmister gave me, I use it before all fert vaccinations.

Ok, so half a teaspoon would be a little high >.< wonder what she was thinking?, that would be almost a double dose.

Oh well i will try the quarter tsp recommended here first and see how it does him... Maybe she wants to have a higher than precautionary pre-dose for a vaccination... Just seemed kinda large to me.

thanks!~

If  you have a 3lb ferret then the dosage above is corrected.  If not, you will have to
re-calculated per ferret's weight.  I used this formula all time, this info from my vet.
I pre-med 1/2 hour before we go to the vet's office.

Please remember when you pre-med......you could  be delaying the reaction.  Be aware and watch your ferrets after they been vacinated.

Also, dont use the grape flavored benydryl, Unless I am mistaken, the dye in it can be toxic, the bubblegum on the other hand is clear I believe and is therefore safer.
