Ten Commandments for Ferrets - Wednesday, January 06, 2010 12:25 AM
Ten Commandments for Ferrets
  1. My life is likely to last 5 to 8 years. Any separation from you will be very painful.
  2. Give me time to understand what you want from me.
  3. Show me your love.....it is crucial for my well being.
  4. Remember that I am a small animal that can be hurt easily. Protect me from all that is brought around me.
  5. Teach me with encouragement, not abuse.
  6. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I recognize your voice.
  7. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, friends, entertainment. I have only you.
  8. Before you hit me, remember that I have teeth that could hurt you, but I choose not to use them.
  9. Care for me when I get old. Remember, you too will grow old.
  10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say "I can't bear to watch" or "Let it happen in my absence." I'm scared and everything is easier if you are with me.
If anyone knows who wrote this please let me know so that I can give them the credit!

I like it too! I think they should have a copy at every Petstore, right on the ferret cage so maybe people will stop and think a bit before they make an impulse purchase.

I agree, too many idiots make that impulse purchase, oh its cute and fuzzy and easy.. Hardly.. If you love ferrets enough they are easy yes, because you love it you would do anything for it.. But to most impulse or gift buyers its just a fuzzy thing to play with.. Too many people dont realize animals depend on us for their care, when we get one we care for it, they think oh he has food and water he just does his thing until its convenient for me.. not at all.. Taking out ferrets and chasing them around burns me right out and causes me pain my chest, but I do it cause I have fun making my ferrets happy.

I really like this, so appropriate. They are all wonderful, but I particularly like two and nine...two because so many people don't even attempt to make an effort to understand and nine because it horrifies me to the core when people ditch elderly pets. My girl is eight and I couldn't imagine abandoning her now that she needs me the most.

THe two of these that always hit me hard are the first and the last.  I sometimes have to leave the fuzzies.  I always get a good pet sitter or see they're care for properly (such as foster at a rescue).  But, I feel bad about having to leave them.

The last one- it is soooo hard when they're ill.   I've had one ferret go to the Bridge on a Sunday, in my arms.  I've held two others after the vet gave them the shot.  One was too ill; I had left her with the vet and I wasn't able to come back for her journey.  I think in some ways, not being there for Merlynn was the hardest to forgive myself for.  But being with them is one of the hardest things I have to do... It's hard to say "goodbye" for this life.

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. If only I could figure out where the ferrets stashed it!

I agree Ferretrunner, ( you made me all teary), being with them when they pass is one of the hardest things I have ever to do. So far I have been there for all my animals when they have gone, and can imagine the heartache of not being there.

I like the "Care for me when I get old" one, so many ferret owners abandon their animals when they are in their senior years, when they need them the most. And in my opinion, when ferrets are most lovely! I enjoy the senior years.

Absolutely love it. I also agree 100% that this should be posted in pet stores

I've read this once before and it's really nice and true.  I too think this should be posted by the ferret cages in petstores.  I get so angry when I see someone in the petstore with their little kid thinking about "how nice it would be to buy little ____ a baby ferret to take care of".... Seriously? *sighs*.  I feel so bad for these little critters sometimes.  So many people think they are like a hamster, and they can just throw them in a cage and forget about them, and that's so not the case.  They need a lot of care, and someone that will love them and care for them even when they are being a pain in the butt, or when they are very sick and need to be given nasty icky meds 3 times a day, and they won't stay still for anything when they see you coming at them with that medicine bottle, and getting them to take that medicine, well thats a whole other story...It's so sad when I see them abandoned or on craigslist, and I swear if I didn't have 6 already I would take them in.  They have such sweet faces and I just want to smoosh all of mine lol.

I love it! I really like them both! I am going to try to get them printed out so I can hang them in the ferret room! Thanks for sharing!

I love it, brought me to tears to think about the fact that some people don't follow these commandments. Would make a perfect commercial for the ASPCA or Humane Society! Those donation one's get me every time!!
