Riley is in the hospital
-
Friday, November 20, 2009 3:56 PM
Today was day two of vet visits for the boys. Riley is very sick. I ended up showing up at my vet's office because Riley wouldn't take his meds, no food, no water and certainly no moving around. My vet referred me to another vet an hour away that could do blood work on Riley. Whatever this is, it's not his blood sugar, which was 93. So we'll see. They are going to call me and hopefully I can pick him up tomorrow. :(

Thank you. I miss him terribly...but at least I don't have to worry about him tonight..I know he's in good capable hands. The new vet was nice and made me feel comfortable leaving him with her. She really seemed to know her stuff. I can't wait until she calls to let me know what's going on. I'm going crazy. (Scrubbing entire ferret room tonight!)

I'm taking a break from my scrubbing.... I've managed to remove everything frm the ferrets room...other ferret included :) (Loki is sleeping behind the couch curled up in my jacket) Washer is full, dryer is full... cages have been scrubbed top to bottom and are drying in the bathroom now, carpet has been swept and vaccumed... dishes and toys are soaking in antibacterial soap and hot hot hot water... and now it's time to disinfect the floor. (I shall disinfect with cleaner and rinse throughly with clean rinse water as not to make my babies sick ) Oh I wish tomorrow would hurry up and get here!

Oh the joys of scrubbing everything down lol. I hope Riley feels better, so far I have had pretty good luck and none of my ferrets have gotten sick. I do not know how though lol, it seems they also find something that I did not hide well enough.

I spoke to the vet this morning around 10:30am and she said that Riley was doing better. He is eating the baby food from a syringe and they are giving him fluids under his skin. He was more active today and has been alert. She said they got a urine sample from him lastnight and his billie rubens were high, but they are lower today. We are still waiting for the rest of the blood work to come back from the lab (monday or tuesday), but she thinks it might have something to do with his liver. The technichian had started giving him the oral antibiotic about an hour before I spoke to her and she said that as long as he can keep that down I could probably go and get him today. (I hope she realizes that I am an hour away and have to have some time to get there before they close at 4!) The scrubbing! OMG! I scrubbed like someone had been killed in there! I was up until after 11:30 lastnight cleaning, reorganizing, moving things around, playing with my other little one... I kept myself pretty busy lastnight. Thanks so much for all the warm wishes. I shall keep you all posted with anything new :) (****sits waiting for the vet to call***)

Right after my last post the vet called for me to come get him! I stopped at PetSmart and got him some new toys and some NBones. We picked him up and the tech said that he was doing much better today. They gave me antibiotics to give him (1/25 a day) and to crush it up and add it to the baby food. When we got him in the car I offered him an Nbone and he went right for it! YEAAAY! He chewed on that for a bit during the ride and then took a nap.... but as soon as we got home.. he was so happy to see Loki. They played for a few seconds but I didn't want Riley to get tired out. I tried to feed him the baby food with the syringe like the tech said, but I didn't have very good luck holding him.Any suggestions on how to hold ths guy so I can feed him??? But overall, things are better. He even actually feels like he's gained weight (it's just the water and fluids they gave him, but still!)

Thank goodness he's feeling better. Try offering some of the baby food on your finger. He may eat it without having to syringe feed. I've also used a little bit of ferrevite or tone to encourage them to try the food.

I haven't offered him the ferretvite yet. I think I might have turned him off to it the other night trying to get him to take that yucky medicine with it. ...but then again, he may not have wanted any simply because he didn't feel well. I'm going to let him sleep for another hour or so and offer him some again. I know he was happy to be home...and have a clean room

I have found recently that if you put them in a sleep sack up to their armpits it makes it much easier to syringe feed them. It seems to keep them in place a lot better. Glad Riley is doing so much better.

Good morning all. Riley seems to be doing alright again today. He got up (with alot of coaxing) and I was able to syringe feed him a little bit of baby food with his anitibiotic in it. He also has been taking little bits of kibble from my hand but the best part is that I saw him go to his water bowl and drink, so at least I know he's drinking on his own. I still find it very hard to syringe feed him, but now I'm starting to think that if he's eating he might be full and I'm tring to stuff food down his throat so I might be making him mad :l I haven't seen him poop yet this morning though. Litter box is clean, and I didn't see him leave any presents in the corner when I got him up.... the vet should be calling me tomorrow or tuesday with the rest of the results and I'm sure we're gonna end up going back in for a follow up. ...So far I'm okay with the amount he's eating and drinking, so I'm not freakin' out yet... Thank you everyone again for all the warm wishes and advice. I appreciate it :)

Re:Riley is in the hospital UPDATE
-
Monday, November 23, 2009 3:24 PM
Good afternoon all. Just wanted to keep everyone posted on the blood work results. I didn't write down what she said it was and what it should be, but the jist of it is that some of his liver numbers were high and some were low. She told me that I should keep him on the antibiotic (which couldn't hurt anyways), but she did say that she thinks we're on the right track with the treatment. She wants to retest his blood in 4-6 weeks to see if the liver is just healing now and that's why the numbers were high/low or if they stay the same and there is something wrong with his liver. The good part about it being the liver (which I dont' really see any good part about this whole problem) but the liver is an organ that regenerates, so it could be that he got into something that bothered him or he damaged his liver (crawling under stuff, tight spots, etc), but it should heal. So we'll see. Lastnight we had a breakthough at about 10pm. He saw me come in the room with baby food in one hand and syringe in the other.. he got right up and to his food bowl he went... NOMNOMNOMNOM! YEAAAAAAAY HE'S EATING!

I am happy to hear he is improving. One thing my vet told me is that when ill their liver values can be horrible, horrible if they were a cat or other pet but for ferrets thats normal when sick as long as they return to normal once they get over the sickness so keep that in mind, poor guy has had a rough few days and we send our good thoughts for him.

Yep, she did say that the liver does regenerate and it will heal its self eventually. I did notice when I came home that he is pooping better now... it's actually formed and resembles poo.... and I can tell it's Riley because Loki poops like he's a small dog! LOL LOL I asked my mom to help me give him his meds... now, i told her BEFORE we started that it might get messy and I hoped she didn't have anywhere to go when she left my house... she didn't... well Riley isn't exactly big on the syringe feeding and won't take the baby food from a finger.. so the syringe it was.. omg mom was hilarious... she went home COVERED in chicken baby food... hehehehehe And after the baby food Riley went right to his cage and ate a whole bunch.. drank a bunch and then went right back to bed... whata good weasel!
