Mushy food? - Friday, November 06, 2009 1:53 PM
Hello all!

I have switched to a mixture of 1/2 Marshalls, 1/2 PVF until the PVF runs out. I have also been supplementing with warm water/food mixture. Is it ok to be giving Laska this mushy food along with dry food, or should I stop doing this after a certain age? The Marshalls bag says to give her a mixture until 6 months of age.

Thanks in advance!

It is my own opinion that ferrets (should their owner choose to feed them a kibble diet) should ALWAYS be fed moist kibble, never ever dry. Kibble is very abrasive and can damage teeth. Ferret teeth just weren't designed for that rough texture. Its said again and again that dry food cleans teeth but this is simply untrue (if it really cleaned teeth one would think that there wouldn't be such a high incidence of peridontal disease in all pets....but there is ;) )

With that being said, dry kibble is also, well....dry. It has no where near the appropriate moisture content. The natural food a ferret is designed to eat (whole small animals) is VERY high in moisture. Kibble is not. Adding water to the kibble not only reduces the abrasion to the teeth but provides the ferret with more water, which is essential.

To keep the food from spoiling you should only put out as much food that will be eaten in 6 hours. Provide mushy (not soupy) food. Wash and sanitize the bowl each time you go to refill it. If the food begins to smell replace it immediately. Ferrets can be "meal fed", If you feed kibble you should feed roughly 3-4 meals a day, depending on how much your ferret eats at each meal.

I hope this information helps you! Also, just a side note. Path Valley and Marshall foods really are not the best brands. I would recommend switching to a different type of food that is higher in protein and lower in carbs. I personally do not feed a kibble diet to my ferrets, so the others can recommend foods for you.

I agree 100% with HolisticFerret about moistening kibble.

8 in 1 Ultimate Crunchy and Drs. Foster and Smith (Original and Natural) are excellent foods that I highly recommend.  These foods will also cut down on your ferret's musky odor!  :D
