Overdue on shots - Thursday, November 05, 2009 8:23 PM
Moose is overdue on his shots by a month or so now, and I was wondering if him having diarrhea or getting sick would have anything to do it?

I'm not a vet, but no I don't think so cause mine don't have any shots. I don't do shots if I don't have to cause 1 of my ferts almost died from a shot. If it gets worse or does not get better then I'd go to the vet. Ferrets tend to get loose stools from time to time. It's probably nothing, but check it out if you are worried.

Yea now, I just read the shot records on William and Jacen and they are not the shots that I am used to seeing given to ferrets. I was under the impression they needed Canine Distemper and rabies...now what is on their records is:

Feline Rhinotracheitis-Calici-Panleukopenia Vaccine

Chlamydia Psittaci Vaccine

Now I googled all of this and this is made for only cats. I just really do not feel comfortable with what they were given. But this was before I got them. So...I am afraid that this might be what is making them feel sick. But I am no vet so..I just would love to know if anyone has had their ferrets given these shots!?

Ferrets do need vaccinated for canine distemper (Purevax by Merial or Galaxy-D by Schering-Plough) and rabies (Imrab-3 by Merial).

They vaccines given to them are useless, as they don't get feline diseases. Do you know when the ferrets were given those shots?

It's unlikely that they are causing the health issues you are seeing - unfortunately it's not uncommon for a ferret to have funky poos.

I would get to a vet asap and get him fixed up. Once they are healthy - then you will need to get them 2 canine distemper vaccines, 3 weeks apart, and one rabies vaccine, to bring them up to date.

Hope this helps!

Mary
