Please help - Monday, November 02, 2009 1:29 PM
My ferrets play rough and I know thats fine, and I've never had any problems... Untill a few months ago when one of my ferrets had sore that bled, it has healed and now he has another right under his ear. I don't know what to do... I'm not sure who hes fighting with...or what is going on but i've had him for almost a year and Never had problems before. I'm nervous that hes getting hurt and I should move him. To be honest hes not the type to be picked on...hes usually the one who plays rough. Help. I don't know what to do.

If it's not a constant thing, I don't know that I would worry too much about it. Is he older? Sometimes their skin thins out when they get older and the bleed more easily...

Thank you ACWN!!!

My first thought is when was his last vet appt? He may need a check up to make sure that something else is not going on. That way you can rule out any health issues. Ferrets play hard, just like kids and he may of accidently got hurt (just like kids!). Good luck!

Thanks ACWN!

Is Teddy by chance, Adrenal? The reason I ask is because he is an older fert and its not uncommon for older ferrets to get adrenal disease, a common symptom of which is agression and/or "mating behavior" which includes rough biting and shaking of another ferret's neck. Sometimes adrenal ferrets will do this to any ferret they can find, not just another member of the opposite sex.

If its a constant thing, and you are sure its Teddy doing it, it might not be a bad idea to take him to the vet to try to rule out adrenal disease.

If it was just a one time thing, I wouldn't be overly concearned. Sometimes "doobears" (what I call ferrets) play a little to rough with each other.

are you positive they are bites, and not sores from scratching or something from an allergy or fleas?
If he is being attacked it could be a good idea to separate him.

Could you get a picture of the sore? My first thought was that it could be a mast cell tumor. It can look like a bite sometimes, and will bleed and then heal, then reappear somewhere new.
