Help ! In need of advice for sick ferret !

I noticed my little guy Pabu was sick a few days ago and took him to the vet. His bloodwork came back today and said it was kidney failure and that I should put him to sleep. They gave me some antibiotics while I was there and they put some liquid in him cos he was super dehydrated. Now I don't know what to do because he's walking now a lot better then what he was before going to the vet and hes more awake! The stuff they gave him and that they gave me to give him is working well for him. My issue is if i should put him to sleep or not? He looks like he's getting better and he's feeling more active within the last 2 days, and I would hate to put him to sleep if theres a chance he could get better. When they took his bloodwork he was extremely dehydrated, so maybe that has something to do with the results and why they said it would be kidney failure? Has anyone had this issue before? Pabu is about 5-6 years old.

Hello and Welcome to the forum! I have had 3 with kidney failure. All girls. I had to learn to do sub-q fluids to keep them hydrated. To start it was once or twice a day until they were well hydrated then as needed. I also (even though it's not specific for ferrets) fed k/d kibble by Hill's Science Diet bought from my vet. It's for animals with kidney disease. Angel we kept pretty healthy for quite a while with it but eventually she succumbed to it. By the time she had it I had experience with the other two. Condition of the teeth can affect their kidneys too. Once your baby is well hydrated you could always ask for new blood work to see if anything changed for the better.

Hi. I'm really sorry you have to deal with this. We've only had to experience it once, my beautiful Alice. Hers came on so quick. I was sub-qing her 25cc 2-3 times a day and my wife was syringe feeding every 2-3 hours for 3 days and she peed out more than I was giving. Once she went down she stopped eating was never strong enough to walk again. She was gone in 4 days. I hope yours does better, but it will be a battle that you will eventually lose, unless you can find a specialist and have unlimited funding. It hurts to say it. Alice was a month shy of 6 years old. Best wishes.
