Best Supplements - Wednesday, November 26, 2014 10:09 PM
Hi, I am a soon to be ferret owner, and I need some advice. I know that ferret kibble does not provide all the nutrients that a ferret needs. What are some good supplements that I can buy to fill in the gaps???

                                  Thanks, Hayden

To get all their electrolytes its okay to do a 2:1 ratio of unflavoured pedialite, but mostly during the day because it can keep them up all night if they keep drinking it. Also its okay to give them ensure (Vanilla protein shake) which is very good for their bones. Not everyday should you give them this but maybe 2-3 times a week will be okay. My babys love ensure milk.

Also look up Wysong products, they're the top products for a healthy ferret.

Yeah no problem. Also at any pet store there is unflavoured mixtures to add to your baby's water to give them all the vitamins/ minerals they'll need. If you have any questions or concerns when you get your new pet feel free to PM me or any other Moderator  on the site. Welcome & and i hope you enjoy your new lovely house mate

My crew eats a wonderful and varied diet so I don't use any supplements daily. I do use a few on occasion and for specific reasons and have had great success with all of them. Bonemeal is the one I use most often, I feed raw soups every day and the bonemeal helps me control the bone content of their ground meat and firms up soft poops. I occasionally use reishi mushroom extract and all natural sea salt. The reishi mushroom has healing properties and works like an anti-histamine and the sea salt is used as an electrolyte and mineral supplement. I credit these for curing Kitter's mast cell tumor on her tail as well as Homer's recurring yeasty earwax buildup. I've used extra virgin olive oil as well as fish oil for coughing and hairball relief and plain canned pumpkin for when I suspected that they may have eaten something bad/blockage protocol. I have also used oral melatonin daily with my original ferret who was suffering from adrenal disease. It doesn't cure the disease but it did wonders for her quality of life over her final 2 years. I still use it sparingly in conjunction with controlling the amount of unnatural light they are exposed to, hoping that it will help my current crew avoid adrenal disease.

Where do you get oral melatonin? I have JJ on it now but just use the pill form.  Need to get some weight on him as well. Any suggestions for that? He has recently lost all of his hair and is in the process of growing it back out!!!

I use the oil form right now, crush it up and add it with some fish oil.. But I'd like to try the liquid form see if it's and easier..
