The best food schedule.
-
Wednesday, November 26, 2014 8:06 PM
I am a soon-to-be ferret owner, but I have some things that I need to get decided before I look for the ferret for me. One of those things happens to be the food schedule for my furry friend. Now, I have looked into the best brands of foods, that make sure the ferret will get what it needs, like enough protein and fats for its diet. But, I am not sure how to construct a food schedule that will keep the variety and also make sure the ferret does not get bored, or eat anything that is not good for it! If anyone could please comment their food schedules, or give me tips, it would really help out so I can hurry and rescue my little buddy. Thank you, Hayden.

If you are feeding kibble, food should be available at all times. You can mix different brands to give them a variety of tastes and textures. Orijen, Natures Variety Instinct, Wellness Core, and Wysong Digestive support are top brands.
Ferrets: Wesley, Percy, Owen -rip Bandit- Bettas- Kitty, Pip, and Logan Sun Conure- Kita Gerbils- Piper and Tailer

We mix 3 kibbles together. If you want variety, try getting them used to a mix, then rotate them out every couple days or so. That way they won't imprint on one food and reject anything else.

Thanks so much for your advice! I still have a lot to research on foods, but I will certainly take what you said and use it!

My kids have the nature's variety instinct kibbles in their cage - 24 hours a day. I do add another kibble to it. Right now, I have wellness core mix in. AM/PM- they also get - raw medallions (nature's variety instinct) I have chicken soup and raw soup made up for them. They will also get this once a day. Monday - chicken soup - Tuesday the raw soup.

Just gives them something different to eat. My guys are not picky eaters.

Wenmister, how do you get your kids to eat the medallions? Mine absolutely refuse, no matter what. I've also tried another brand of hydrated meat, tried adding it to egg, tried putting ferretone in it, olive oil, even salmon oil and they refuse

In the beginning I would defrost the medallions then add some warm water to it. Once they got used to that. I would just defrost the medallions and chop it up in a bowl. You can also try....If you make them soup. Try defrosting the medallions and add your soup to it. I hope this helps

I will definitely try. I also use the dehydrated cubes (forget the brand name) YOu have to keep them in the fridge, and add water to rehydrate. Yea, that's a no no as well lol

Mine got used to re-hydrated raw by mixing in moistened kibble. The first soups would be 80% moistened kibble with 20% rehydrated raw. Then I'd lower the % of kibble in the mix until they ate the raw soupies. Ours absolutely love Stella and Chewy's Duck and Lamb products. They like the Venison, Rabbit, Chicken, and turkey varieties. They tolerate the beef and salmon types.
