Sunday, November 23, 2014 7:22 PM
Hey guys, I was wondering about what I would need for letting my ferrets play outside.. Right now I have some play pens that are indoors, but I would really like for them to expirence the outdoors. Also I know some owners train their ferrets to hunt.. How would I go about this?...
[font="'courier new'; line-height: 1.4"]I hope the following information I supplied helps you in anyway possible..

Hunting with ferrets is illegal here in the States. They can be used to hunt in Europe. From what I have seen, people who hunt with their ferrets don't usually keep them like house pets, but more like working animals. Of course there are probably exceptions. If your ferrets can't escape a playpen indoors, there's a good chance it will work outside, but don't leave them unattended unless they have a locked hutch. They love digging and it doesn't take long to get under a barrier. And a playpen may not keep predators out. You can get a harness and a leash to walk them outside. Make sure the harness is snug because they can slip them of if it's not. It's a good idea to try the harness on your ferret inside and let them wear it for a while to get used to it.

My kids love to go outside. Make sure you stand over your little. I have fear that a hawk would come down and take the little one. When I use the playpen outdoors, I always put a light blanket on top. You might want to think about putting some flea control on them, since they are going outdoors. Here is the US ferrets are not allowed to be used in hunting. Welcome to forum.

Sounds like you are an American. While being the same species as our friends in Europe our ferrets(mill bred pet store ferrets) have lost most of their natural survivability qualities. Meaning they can't fend for themselves, so it is crucial that if you take them outside that they are in a ferret proof pen, properly leashed, or can't get away. If you plan on making a pin you'll need to peruse this forum and the holistic forum. There's a lot of helpful threads out their on proper shelters. One of the biggest things is never take them out if the temperature is over 70 fahrenheit.

Part of being "Americanized" is that, from my experience, they can tolerate temps well into the 80s. I'm in Florida, and my gang has free access to our screened porch, and will sleep in their dresser, wrapped in sheets, when temps get into the high 80s. The porch has a northern exposure, and never in direct sun. They don't like going outside in the sun when it's too warm. But you definitely want them to be secured outside. It only takes a minute or two to dig under a playpen. I would never leave them unattended outdoors. I never let them get more than a step or 2 away from me on walks, because we have hawks and eagles in the neighborhood.

I have a pen for my ferrets and they can go outside in it but it has a floor and a top wired just like the sides so they can't escape and nothing can get to them but they can look around and have fresh air. It is pretty large 4x6 so I can put five or six ferrets in it at a time. I still tend to stay out with them though since I know the neighborhood kids love my ferrets and I don't want them playing with them unless I am there watching.
