Ferret Dental Care Routine! - Wednesday, August 27, 2014 2:49 PM
Hey guys,

I was wondering if using cat/kitten toothpaste was alright to clean my ferret's teeth... I use a soft baby brush and only used water to brush their teeth, but Max's teeth has gotten yellow now and his breath stinks. I'm thinking of bringing him in for a teeth cleaning job at my clinic, but am looking to find a better way to keep his teeth cleaned so next time, I can at least help prevent the yellowness and stinky breath.

If toothpaste is alright, what brand would you recommend? When choosing a toothpaste, is there something to look out for?

Raw chicken necks are also an option. Think of them as nature's toothbrush.
If you'd prefer to use toothpastes, I'd try to find one that doesn't have any kind of sweeteners. I know flouride is also something to avoid, but to be honest I'm not sure how many pet toothpastes contain them anyway. I've heard good things about CET enzymatic toothpaste, but haven't tried it personally.

If his breath is really stinky, I'd be inclined to think there might be something else going on dental wise.

Just curious, what is he fed? I've noticed that certain foods (Mazuri ferret especially) seem to contribute to bad teeth

Ferrets: Wesley, Percy, Owen    -rip Bandit-
Bettas- Kitty, Pip, and Logan
Sun Conure- Kita
Gerbils- Piper and Tailer

All of my ferrets are fed Orijen Cat and Kitten. They're given Blue Wilderness canned cat food once a month, mainly given because of Ramsey who has a difficult time gaining weight and keeping it. They get raw chicken and wing bones every now and then but to be honest, I haven't seen their teeth improve at all even when I did give them raw meat often.
