Walnut litter
-
Tuesday, January 06, 2015 10:29 PM
I swapped over to trying out that new Blue Walnut litter for my cats and was wondering if anyone here has experience using it for their ferrets? Since I plan on having the ferret cage near the living room I want to reduce the smell as much as possible and have found, at least with my cats, that newpaper pellet stuff is crap. And it'll just be easier to use the same litter for both my animals. I may revert back to Exquisicats corn or pine if those are better?

I would be careful with anything that your new baby could eat....it could get impacted! Also, someone correct me if im wrong but I always confuse the woods...but isnt that one of the ones that can cause respiratory problems?

I haven't used it but I agree with you on the paper litter. Dar loves it but I found it hard to scoop. We use pine pellets, which we wet slightly to get them to break apart. They do track some, but I think they do a good job on odor control. The walnut litter had mixed reviews. I don't think it's very aromatic, though, is it? http://reviews.petco.com/3554/117877/blue-buffalo-blue-naturally-fresh-multi-cat-clumping-cat-litter-reviews/reviews.htm One reviewer complained "I have to change the litter once a week." When we had a cat, Feline Pine seemed to last a long time, but our ferrets didn't like it. When I had 3 cats and clay litter, I had to change litter weekly, if I scooped it every day.

Here is something to think about. Shavings can promote severe respiratory problems in ferrets. Cedar shavings are the most toxic, and pine shavings can also be problematic because of oils and acids. Aspen shavings are the only wood shavings suitable for ferrets. Corn cob litter can add to respiratory problems due to dust, and some ferrets ingest the corn cob pellets and get intestinal blockages.

Here are some tips keeping the smell down. *Keeping the litter box clean will significantly reduce odors. I clean out my litter box, 2x day. *Different kinds of litter perform differently at absorbing moisture and controlling odors. *One of the most effective ways to keep your ferret smelling fresh is to keep the ferret’s bedding clean. *Animal waste causes odors. You can control the both the strength of the smell and the amount of the waste with a proper diet. * Make sure your cage is made out of washable materials, such as plastic or coated wire. Wooden cages will hold the odor in. *Bad Breath can cause odor, please check your ferret's teeth. Ferret could have dental problems *Check those ears! A common contributor to strong ferret odors is dirty ears. *Do not bathe your ferret. Bathing strips the ferret’s skin and fur of essential oils, and "dries the ferret out." Dry skin is itchy skin, which is uncomfortable for your ferret.

Change bedding at least once a week, I wash mine in a homemade mild hyperallergenic detergent that my mom makes for me to use because my skin is so sensitive. It works great for the boys bedding as well. If the bedding gets to icky, I'll actually trash it. I use of a lot of old shirts, and pillow cases (in fact 2 of their hammocks are pillow cases right now LOL) Scoop litter boxes every day, if not twice a day. Make sure they're eating a good food like Wenmister suggested. I do bath my guys, but only twice a year, unless other wise needed. Unfortunately they got an extra one recently because somehow my can ended up with fleas, so I had to treat them as well. To be honest, and I have a feeling this is going to cause a controversary, But I use a regular cat litter. I use one that is 99% dust free, and I've used it for the 10years I've had ferrets, and have never had problems. No I don't use a clumping one, that's a BIG No No. But it works, little dust, I can use it for them and the cat, and it's cheap.
