Cage cleaning
-
Tuesday, November 18, 2014 3:08 AM
Hello, I am new to this site cause I am going to be getting two ferrets soon! (Thor and Loki). I have been doing a lot of research and would mostly like to know ahead of time how often you would have to clean the cage to keep the smell down. (Daily cleaning schedule) I like to keep things really clean, so I don't mind the work! Also, what are some mild cleaning solutions that are ferret friendly?

Saturday morning is when I clean the FN cage. All bedding in the cage is washed. Clean bedding is replaced. My furkids are pretty clean. So, I just wipe down the tray (FN cage) mild cleaner. Food/water cups are also cleaned. Litter boxes are also cleaned. I scoop out my litter boxes twice a day. (Am/PM) to help with the smell. I hope this helps

Here are some tips keeping the smell down. *Keeping the litter box clean will significantly reduce odors. I clean out my litter box, 2x day. *Different kinds of litter perform differently at absorbing moisture and controlling odors. Most people use recycle newspaper pellets or wood pellets for litter. *One of the most effective ways to keep your ferret smelling fresh is to keep the ferret’s bedding clean. *Animal waste causes odors. You can control the both the strength of the smell and the amount of the waste with a proper diet. * Make sure your cage is made out of washable materials, such as plastic or coated wire. Wooden cages will hold the odor in. *Bad Breath can cause odor, please check your ferret's teeth. Ferret could have dental problems *Check those ears! A common contributor to strong ferret odors is dirty ears. *Do not bathe your ferret. Bathing strips the ferret’s skin and fur of essential oils, and "dries the ferret out." Dry skin is itchy skin, which is uncomfortable for your ferret. *Fixing your ferret. The strongest contributor to ferret odor is not the scent sacs or glands, but the hormones.

Hi and welcome! Generally, we scoop litter boxes morning and evening, and we usually end up changing the litter once a day because we have 8 ferrets. With 2 ferrets, you could probably change litter every 2-3 days. If you don't mind doing it, scoop them whenever you see they've been used. Fuzzies have pretty strong smelling pee, too. The smell builds up in the trash can. We use vinegar spray (1/3 with 2/3 water) and baby wipes.

I have the Ferret Nation 142 cage - it's SO easy to clean and its the best cage out there IMHO My guys use a pee pad at the bottom of the cage. I change it everyday and I use Green Clean (I think that's what its called - I will confirm when I get home :) ) I spray the shelf - wipe it down and put a new pee pad down. Once a week in the summer and every other week in the winter I change out all their blankets. I never bathe my ferrets with shampoo or soap unless they've gotten into something - but I will give them a bath with just warm water whenever I change their blankets A good food makes them poop less and smell less bad. Daxy came to me eating Marshall's ferret food and he was the stinkiest ferret ever! It took a good while to get him to eat the better kibble I prefer (that's not available from ferret.com so i don't think I'm allowed to post it but I'll PM if you if you'd like to know :) ) Have a blast with your babies!!
