Ferret Freedom
-

Hi Guys. New to the site and have a question on ferret behaviour. I bought Henry about 1.5 years ago off craigslist. Henry likes to play with the dogs and goes in and out the dog door with them. I keep an eye on him because I live in the country and hawk's could be a problem. He goes outside and plays, goes down rabbit holes and any other varment hole he fits in. He likes the barn because a lot of rabbits hide in the hay. I taught him to come to a whistle and he comes running if I call him. He is out for about 3 hours a day. He comes to his cage for a drink, a snack and back outside for more play. He also has to have human contact at some point. When he is done playing he returns to his cage, climbs in his hammock and goes to sleep. After he goes to bed I lock the door until the next morning. So my question is. Is this normal for a ferret to always come home and not run off? Henry has a lot of freedom because he has earned it. Thanks! Gene

I am new to ferrets, but I just have to comment what an awesome life he has! I am personally such a mother hen, that when our little fuzzbutt is running loose, I have to know where she is at all times and that is IN the house, lol

I guess it's all depends on the ferret's personality. I certainly wouldn't take chance with my furkids running free outdoors and coming back into the home. There is a big chance that your little one may not returned back to the home. If he gets brave enough I am sure he would wander off else where and their might be danger a head.

wow that's really cool. I wouldnt' risk my ferrets being out unattended, I live in a national park with hawks, bears, coyotes, bigger angrier wild ferrets, sasquatch, wolves! I wish my ferret could do what yours does! Please be careful and best of luck. He seems to have a great life for a ferret! I don't know how good a ferrets homing skills are, but one time I took Cuete to my dads house and tethered his leash to the clothesline so he could run the lenght of the yard. He wriggled free! I was so scared, we looked for like 15 min, and then i looken in the backpack i brought him in, and there he was! sleeping all bundled up in his hoody. I was so relieved.
