Ferret toe nails
-
Sunday, July 13, 2014 10:11 PM
So my baby Niko's nail tips keep turning black. At first I thought that he just had poo on them. well the second time it showed up I dabbed at them with a damp paper towel and it came back reddish brown. This makes me think that its blood or scabs. Now it has showed up for the third time today and I haven't even trimmed his claws recently. It is always the back claws and the very tips not even close to the quiks... I try not to even get close to them when I trim. I don't trim a lot off at a given time either... any ideas? Should I worry or is this normal?

I haven't heard of this. How many toes are affected? Could you get a pic? The only thing I can think of is fungus, but that is only a guess. Have you examined his feet? Is it just the tips? If it's a real concern, take him in to the vet. Even if I guess right, I can't fix it. He might need an oral medication to kill it if it's fungal.

Looks to me like they're just dirty. The underside of the nail is concave so it traps dirt. My guys get that when they're lazy in the litterbox and don't watch where they step (turds!) A romp in some water should clean it out.

If it wipes off easy then I would guess its dirt or poop cuz fungus shouldn't wipe off that easy. A nail fungus would discolor the nail where it is growing and would take some serious wiping to remove, if at all. If it were blood you would see it in other places as well, and there would need to be a source (cut/wound) and since you didn't trim nails before you saw it that eliminates that. I bugged out once too with my dog, found 2 nails that were black, though fungus, infection..... then we realized that she has 2 nails that are black while all the rest are white/clear. Just her coloring.
