Potty Training Baby Ferrets?
- Friday, July 11, 2014 10:12 PM
Hello! New here. I've had ferrets before but before I've only gotten older fuzzies people could no longer keep. By this time they had pretty solid potty habits, my first ferret would even grunt and squeak to be let down so he could run to use his potty properly. My second ferret had some misses but she was overall good about it... this lead me to believe all ferrets were fairly decent with the potty....
I now have 2 baby ferrets I received from a friend who decided she didnt have the time for them. The youngest I ever had was 4 years old... these ones are 3 months and 7 months... and they are poop machines. I moved the litter pan to the corner they preferred and put the poop in the pan in hopes to make them realize they needed to poop there.
Instead they dug the poop out and sleep in the pan while pooping in all the other corners. I've tried to move the pan twice now to get them in the pan but they absolutely refuse it.
What else can I do to get them to go in the pan?
I use the bedding that the petstore was using with their ferrets which is this soft grey papery stuff. I usually just put it in the litter pan for my old ferrets and put down cloth in their cage, but these guys dig it out all over their cage and want to sleep on it. Maybe another form of litter might work?

that is a kit for you.
What type of litter box are you using?
Litter Training - Cage
1. No shelves or level. Bring them down to one floor.
2. Cover all those corners with some type of object. (water bottle/bowl, food bowl, litter box, toy)
3. I like to use a high back litter box. Ferrets like to get their whole body into the litter box. Some times boys may over shoot ....high back litter box are great for that.
4. I usually hang a hammock over the litter box
Leave them in that setup for a month or so. Be patience and don't be hurry to put the shelves back up. It will be less work for you in the future.
You can try another type of litter. I use wood pellet (hard wood) for my litter box.
If you upload a picture of your cage setup. It will be much easier for our members to give you some suggestions.
I hope this helps
