Hello all
-
Sunday, December 20, 2015 1:48 AM
Today we acquired a 6 yr old girl. Her name is lola. The old owners got her for their kids when she was a baby and I guess now the kids do not pay any attention to her. We got her set up here and I was going to give her a full day to adjust but to be honest her cage was nasty so she had some cage free time with my son's while I scrubbed the cage. She's extremely sweet. Wants nothing more than to be by my dog. My dog feels the same. I caught the ferret licking my dog from between the cage bars. I've done a lot of research on ferrets over the years but If anyone has any tips or advise I would appreciate it.

Hi. It's great that she and the dog like each other, but since they are new to each other please be careful. 6 is older for a ferret, but she may have a couple good years left in her. At her age there are a number of medical problems that could appear. What does she eat? How is her cage set up? some pics would be great. Be very careful she doesn't get out an open door. If you have any specific questions, we'd be glad to help. welcome to the group.

I tried to post pictures but it seems all my pics are too big to be posted. I'm feeding her a Marshall brand feed. If there is something better I am open to hear it. Back when I had birdsome I made them their seed/veggie/herb mix so if there's something along those lines I would be up to trying it. She doesn't like to eat "real meat" I'm guessing has never had it. Are they able to cough up hairballs? Or are they like bunnies and have to pass them? Thanks you all

Ferrets are meat eaters. If you want to make something healthy check out the duck/chicken soup recipes in the food section. > She doesn't like to eat "real meat" I'm guessing has never had it. She might not be imprinted on raw meat. Check out the food section and pickout some good quality food along with duck/chicken soup. ? Are they able to cough up hairballs? Or are they like bunnies and have to pass them? Thanks you all No, they can't cough up hairballs. I put pure pumpkin in there soup for hairball preventative. Welcome to forum!

Lol I didn't mean making her something like I made the birds. I meant making her food in general instead of buying pre-made food. I certainly will look into that area of the forum. Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the group. I had to grind kibble and mix with water to make a soup, then added raw ground turkey or chicken to it. That was the only way I could get them to eat raw. And, it had to be warm, they wouldn't touch it cold at first.

I pickup a whole chicken. Put that in the crock pot to cool. Let it cook. Then I pick away at the meat and skin. (No bones) Place that into a blender with the chicken broth and blend until smooth. I will add the following into the blender with the meat/broth. * pure pumpkin * Kibbles ( I save the small piece of kibbles for the soup) * Heavy whipping cream (helps put weight on) You can pour into ice cube trays (1 cube = 1 serving) or pour into small plastic containers, then freeze it. I have 5 ferrets at home. I usually go thru 1 chicken per month. I hope this helps

Thank you everyone! I will definitely try your ideas! They sound great. Do they usually bond more with one person? She is great with us all but her and my 10 year old son seem to have a special bond that started the minute they got together. She will snuggle up to him and sleep which she doesn't do with anyone else

Sure they do. Most animals have a favorite hooman, and can't hide it like we do.

Hahahahaha that made me laugh out loud. The ironic thing about lola picking my son is that in the beginning he was the only one in the house that didn't want her. That changed the second he seen her.
