Ferret coughing/throwing up clear liquid - Saturday, June 07, 2014 4:22 PM
I have a one year old male ferret. He started throwing up food four days ago and that lasted two days. Now he is keeping food down but continues to cough/throw up clear liquid.
He has seen a vet twice and had an ultrasound and x ray done. Everything came back normal.
His activity level is normal and so is his appetite.

The vet wants to move to exploratory surgery and I do not wish to put my ferret through that unless it is the last option.

Any ideas?

He has been on medication for 10 days now which is a combination of amoxicillin, pepcid, an ulcer medicine, and metronidazole. He is still throwing up, but it is only occasionally after he eats or after he is given medication. His stools and urine are normal. His appetite is normal. He has been losing weight over the past week and has some days where he is more lethargic. I still have no idea what could be wrong with him because I can't find anything online like his symptoms. The vet diagnosed him with Helicobacter and after calling the vet again after 10 days of medicine, the vet still wants to do exploratory.
Should I proceed with the surgery? Or should I let him finish his 30 days of medication?

Also I am wondering if I should get a second opinion. I have owned a total of 7 ferrets and have never seen a one year old ferret get so sick so fast.

Very strange. I'm sorry you weren't able to get a conclusive diagnosis.

Could you crosspost to the AFA facebook page? Maybe someone with a similar experience can chime in.

went to a second vet today. they took more x-rays. found out he has a tumor in his chest pushing on his esophagus making him throw up. they said he will only live a few more weeks and nothing can be done.
